About Life Cycle Assessment:

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method used to assess the environmental impacts of a product or a product system. The purpose of LCA is to support product design and optimization by assessing where in the life cycle of a product or service the environmental impacts arise and how the design or the production can be changed to reduce the environmental impacts. LCA is often used to compare different solutions.

The use of LCA is increasingly beeing used in regulation within the European Union. The regulation of waste management is one example of that. LCA is also an important part of certification methods for sustainable buildings in Europe. In addition to that volunatary European standards for the performance of LCA within buildings and building materials are under development. Other industry sectors such as the food-processing industry and the steel manufacturers are also playing a key role on integrating LCA in their product design and are starting to establish initiatives for the development of standards or product labels.

This is the second time that a course in Life Cycle Assessment is being provided at the Environment and Natural Ressources Study Program at the University of Iceland. In relation to the course the department invites to an open meeting where the teachers in the course introduce the LCA methodology, how an LCA tool can aid on carrying LCA and sustainability projects, and some examples of the use of LCA.
