Many dyes, colorants and production processes involve the processing of the textiles with acid baths and various toxins,  some of which are  harmful to human health.  Also the production of textiles is often the source of serious environmental and health problems although   some textiles are better than others.

Cotton is one of the most harmful raw materials because many toxins are used during it’s cultivation. For one kg of cotton produced you need around one kg of toxins. However, if the consumer chooses organic cotton, then the use of toxic chemicals is almost banned and the use of harmful chemicals, extremely  limited.

The Fair trade label certifies that products have been produced in an ethically responsible manner, without harmful effects to the employees and with reasonable compensation.

When choosing textiles for the kitchen it should be taken into account that they have to be washed regularly and that the textiles, therefore, need to be durable.

From the above it can be understood that it is, in all cases most environmentally friendly to choose textiles made from organic cotton or which are eco-labelled by acknowledged certifiers. Textiles made in Iceland have the advantage of not having been transported over long distances making  them more environmentally friendly  than similar textiles which have been imported.

  • Rags that can be used again and again are better than paper rolls, but microfiber cloth is the best solution as they eliminate the need for cleaning agents.
  • It is necessary to wash all textiles regularly so they do not accumulate bacteria.
  • If it is necessary to use a paper roll, eco-labelled kitchen towels can be found in most shops today.
