The Italian astronomer Galileo was one of the first to use a telescope to look at the solar system. He discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter and what’s more he discovered that they orbit Jupiter, but not the Earth, which was a groundbreaking discovery within astronomy. Ever since then, astronomers have used the telescope to observe the cosmos. Another great discovery came when Edwin Hubble discovered with the help of the telescope and his assistant that the universe is expanding.
The telescope is the main instrument of the astronomical sciences, and new and more advanced telescopes are constantly being sent into orbit around the Earth. With the help of the telescope astronomers have discovered that the universe is expanding faster and faster, which has not been fully explained and which surprised many scientists. The cosmos seems to be an even more wondrous place and more amazing than we humans have ever been able to imagine. The cosmos continues to surprise us.
