Around 20% of the energy use of the home is used in lighting up the house and its surroundings. By exchanging ordinary light bulbs with economic light bulbs, turning of the light when not in use and by using light paint on the walls, the electricity use for lighting can be considerably reduced. Economic light bulbs only use one fourth of the energy other bulbs need in order to provide the same amount of lighting.
If all light bulbs in Icelandic homes were economic light bulbs, we would save energy equivalent to one 20MW hydroelectric dam or geothermal energy plant.
