Certified Organic

Organic standards promote soil fertility, crop rotation, use of organic fertilisers, biological diversity and animal welfare. Products may only be marketed with reference to organic methods upon verification accredited third-party certification.

Local Food

Food is grown locally and processed locally. If processed it is either sold locally or domestically. Not neccesarily organic.

Environmental Education

Can range from intensive programs within the regular school system or university, to places offering one-time environmental workshops and lectures to the public.

Local Business

Innovative local businesses that use natural resources and eco-friendly/self-sustaining methods of production.

Elf Site

The belief in elves and trolls is linked to Icelands' Celtic tradition as well as to the harsch nature and climate. Here we map sites believed to be enchanted by elves, spirits and other supernatural phenomena.

Certifications. Labels and Awards:

Organic certification - Tún

The organic certification agency Tún manages the surveillance on organic produce in Iceland. Organic agriculture requires that its’ production is grown without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in accordance to the European Union’s regulations on organic agriculture. It is illegal within the European Union to label any produce organic unless it fulfills the standards of the Union’s regulations. The certificate does not include the environmental impact of the product itself or its packaging.

South Iceland - Local traditions

The Food Cluster of South Iceland and The Westman Islands aim is to preserve and promote the local food traditions in accordance with the international ´slow food´ ideology.  By using local primary products we strengthen the food production as well as contributing to the stabilization of the food security in Iceland.  It also shortens the transportation routes , decreases pollution and cuts transportation costs.The Food Cluster of South Iceland has not been active for several years.
